Your Painting Station
You don't need a dedicated hobby room or an expensive desk to start painting miniatures. A kitchen table, a desk corner, or even a TV tray works fine. What matters is having good light, a comfortable seat, and your supplies within arm's reach. Most painters start simple and gradually build out their workspace as they figure out what they actually need.
- ●A desk lamp with a daylight bulb (5000-6500K) — this is the single most important thing. Warm yellow lighting makes colors look wrong and strains your eyes
- ●Two cups of water — one for rinsing your brush, one with clean water for thinning paint
- ●Paper towels or a cloth rag — for wiping brushes and cleaning up spills
- ●A wet palette (or make one with a shallow container, damp sponge, and parchment paper) — keeps paint workable for hours instead of minutes
- ●A comfortable chair at the right height — you'll be sitting for a while
- ●A cutting mat or old newspaper to protect your surface
A $10 desk lamp with a daylight LED bulb will improve your painting more than any expensive brush or paint. If you buy one thing before your next painting session, make it a proper light.
If you're using spray primer, always do it outdoors or in a very well-ventilated area. The fumes are harmful in enclosed spaces. Brush-on primer is a great alternative if you don't have outdoor access.
Organization isn't about being neat — it's about efficiency. When you can grab the right brush or paint without searching, your painting sessions flow better and you stay focused longer. A simple paint rack, a brush holder (even a mug works), and a small tray for your current project's paints make a world of difference. But don't overthink it — painters have created amazing work with nothing more than a lamp, a few brushes, and a handful of paints on a folding table.
